If you’ve been following our Instagram account over the last year or two, you know that Bruce Wayne absolutely hates swimming and anything to do with water! It might seem like cruel and unusual punishment that I take the ViaGen Pets puppies aka The Others aka Bruce Wayne’s Mini Me’s swimming, but that is the exact reason why I took them swimming. I don’t want The Others to hate water as much as Bruce Wayne. I’m hopeful that maybe with more exposure to swimming, just maybe, The Others will actually enjoy it …. Or, at least not hate it …. Completely!
My other, and the more important reason, why I am taking them swimming is why every dog parent should take their dog swimming. God forbid your dog be on a boat with your family, walking on the boardwalk or anything else and he falls into the water. You don’t want his first experience with a large body of water being an emergency. Just like kids, if something (knock on wood) should happen to them, you want them to at least be familiar with water and have a good idea of what to do.
With that being said, as you may know, I live in Baltimore, Maryland. We aren’t as progressive as I’d like us to be when it comes to dogs. So no, we do not have any dog-friendly community pools, no pools at our local dog park and certainly no luxurious dog hotels with a decent sized swimming pool for The Others to try swimming in. 🙁
However, what we do have is a Pet Depot. This is a independent pet store located in Timonium, Maryland. Luckily for us, they do have a dog pool. Unfortunately for us, Maryland has a ton of health codes when it comes to dogs, so no humans are allowed in the pool with the dogs. This makes it difficult, as I knew The Others would be more willing to jump in if myself or “Alfred” went into the pool with them.
Much to our delight, the Pet Depot staff was amazing! We had 3 staff members come help us suit up the boys in their life jackets and put their leashes on properly.
Once everyone was ready, we started putting the boys into the pool and letting them test out the water. While I paid for and attempted to get Bruce Wayne into the pool, he took a few steps in and realized quickly that he wanted no part of this and came running back out. Since I know Bruce Wayne knows how to swim and truly hates the water, I didn’t make him go back in. You know how it goes, what Bruce Wayne wants, Bruce Wayne gets! 😉
Sadly, it looks like Peter Parker is following in Bruce Wayne’s “paw steps” with his dislike for water. While Tony Stark wasn’t a fan, he tolerated it and swim well. My two big swimmers were Clark Kent and Wade Wilson. While I don’t think either of them will be excited and jump back in the next time on their own, they had such great doggy paddle form (lol) and weren’t panicking nearly as much as say Peter Parker or Bruce Wayne.
At Pet Depot, you pay for the time you use in the pool. Each time slot is 15 minutes long and you can bring your whole pack of dogs to swim during those 15 minutes, however, you do pay per dog. As I mentioned before, included in this fee is their helpful and friendly staff. We had 3 Pet Depot staff members that came to help us. I wasn’t sure how interactive they would be with The Others, but they were amazing! Also included in the initial fee is free use of their self wash stations after your dog gets out of the pool. In here, you can hose of your dog and dry them off with either their electric dryer or hand dry them with the towels that they supply.
Even though The Others didn’t necessarily “enjoy” swimming. I want to keep building on their swimming skills while also giving them a good workout. My goal is to familiarize them with water and hopefully get them to a point where we could possibly attend one of those swanky end of summer “we let the dogs into the pool” parties. I want to hear how your dogs do in pools or the ocean. Leave me a comment below or DM us through our Instagram account and let me know how you introduced your dog to the water. We will be headed back to the pool in about 2 weeks to take The Others swimming again. Paws crossed there’s a bit more excitement about it! 😉
